Daughter of Asklepios, god of healing, Hygeia was frequently pictured in antiquity with her father, and is mentioned in the Hippocratic oath immediately after him. In a world that understood little about the mysteries of medicine, the goddess of health was a deity whose blessing was important. She stands here--serene and gracious--with an attitude of healthful benevolence that is still comforting even in a better-informed modern age.
