| Description |
This antique carnelian intaglio has been set in a
modern 24 karat gold ring.
Two central faces of a man and woman are
joined Janus-like to a single head on this
intriguing intaglio. Another face forms the top of
the head looking upwards, while a fourth is
positioned downwards. The male at left wears a
beard, while the female is crowned with a tiara. It
is known that Classical Revival engravers used
ancient coins as models for their work. This
intaglio is similar to a tetradrachm of Tenedos
(an Aegean island off the coast of Turkey) minted
2nd century B.C., showing the Janiform heads of
Zeus and his wife Hera. If this is true for our
intaglio, then the other faces may be their
children Ares (god of war) on top, and Hebe
(personification of youth) .at bottom. A surreal
effect is created in the union of these four
profiles, playing delightful tricks with the eye.
